Something uncovered recently in the club files — one of the old North County Fencing Club patches!

For the curious or uninformed, it’s significant because the current incarnation of the St. Louis Fencers Club came about when the NCFC and SLFC merged circa 1990.

More to come as the archives are dug into!

Dangerous Old Men = Social Harmony?

April 20, 2010

This article makes an interesting point:

I agree.

I see a definite and very palpable difference in teens/young men who regularly train — whether it’s Eastern martial arts or fencing — with older men who are more skilled and capable. It’s almost like it takes the pressure off the young men to try to show off as the alpha in the room when it’s clear there’s a another guy right there twice or even three (or four!) times his age who’s quite capable of taking him down.  I’ve seen it myself — heck, I’ve trained under it myself  — and the kids I’ve seen come out of my classes have so far grown to be respectful, capable, solid citizens and young men.

But maybe my sample’s a bit small — anyone else have an experience or thought on this?

April 13, 2010

In general, fencers seem to love history and historical weapons so heads up:  Spike TV’s series, where experts test ancient weapons and combat techniques of two different historical fighters before simulating a battle to the death between them, is back with new episodes starting April 20, 2010 at 9:00 PM CT.

Ballistic gel torsos + Melee weapons = Awesomeness
